Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) has declared Democrats arguing transgender athletes should be allowed to participate in female college and youth sports are out of touch on the issue.
On his newly-launched podcast, Newsom invited Charlie Kirk for a blunt conversation on the state of the Democratic Party, with Newsom at one point asking Kirk for “advice,” arguing people “need to understand your success.” Kirk is a conservative influencer primarily focused on capturing the youth vote for the right.
“Would you say no men in female sports?” Kirk asked Newsom during their conversation on This Is Gavin Newsom.
“Well, I think it’s an issue of fairness, I completely agree with you on that. It is an issue of fairness, it’s deeply unfair,” Newsom told Kirk on transgender athletes. “I am not wrestling with the fairness issue. I totally agree with you.”
Kirk brought up AB Hernandez, a California transgender track star in high school, who is in the middle of a heated debate around the issue after a triple jump in the women’s competition, which Hernandez won, drew backlash.
“I revere sports, so the issue of fairness is completely legit,” Newsom said. “And I saw that — the last couple years, boy did I [see] how you guys were able to weaponize that issue at another level.”
The governor admitted Democrats are getting “crushed” on the issue, while also expressing sympathy for transgender citizens, saying, “the way that people talk down to vulnerable communities is an issue that I have a hard time with.”
“So both things I can hold in my hand. How can we address this issue with the kind of decency that I think you know is inherent in you, but not always expressed on the issue?” Newsom said.
