Sen. Rick Scott (R-FL) called on the Trump administration to prosecute Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) for helping undocumented immigrants know their rights.
Bizarrely, the senator singled out border czar Tom Homan to do the job, even though Homan has no prosecutorial authority.
Last month, Ocasio-Cortez’s office held a webinar that explained the tactics used by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents. Her office also shared a guide outlining the rights migrants have under the law. Homan and other Republicans have slammed the congresswoman. Homan even went so far as to tell Fox News two weeks ago that he flagged the webinar to the deputy attorney general, presumably to investigate Ocasio-Cortez. Meanwhile, Fox News legal analyst Jonathan Turley said prosecuting the lawmaker over the webinar “would be an assault on free speech rights.”
On Monday, Scott told right-wing commentator Benny Johnson that Homan was on to something.
“I think it sure seems like she’s violating the law,” Scott said on The Benny Show, declining to cite what law Ocasio-Cortez allegedly broke. “And if she’s done something wrong, I hope Tom Homan does his job and, you know, prosecutes her to the full extent of the law.”
Ocasio-Cortez responded to Homan’s threat last month by telling him to become literate.
“Maybe he can learn to read,” she said. “The Constitution would be a good place to start.”
AOC isn’t the only public official Homan has threatened. Last month, he suggested New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy could be jailed for “concealing an illegal alien.”
