University of Santo Tomas clinched a fourth straight victory in the UAAP Season 87 women’s volleyball tournament after dumping University of the Philippines, 25-11, 25-23, 23-25, 25-12, on Wednesday at Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
Regina Jurado and Angge Poyos were productive with 22 and 20 points, respectively, thanks to Cassie Carballo’s 21 excellent sets to power the Golden Tigresses to a 4-1 record, just behind unbeaten National University.

Defense ace Detdet Pepito defended the floor with 22 excellent digs and 10 excellent receptions to help UST return to composure after losing control of the third frame.
“Coach Kungfu told the players that the good thing about the third set was that we were able to catch up. The problem was, we just couldn’t sustain it,” UST assistant coach Yani Fernandez said.

“But then again, we told them going into the fourth set that we couldn’t afford to play like that anymore. We needed to reset and regroup—and thankfully, the result in the fourth set turned out well,” he added.
UST’s winning run includes victories against University of the East, La Salle, Adamson before the Maroons.
Down two sets to none, UP surprised the Tigresses by carving out an 11-18 edge in the third frame. UST fought with a 4-1 run to close in to the Maroons, 21-23, that forced coach Benson Bocboc to call a timeout.

But UP was determined to extend the match to a fourth set despite the continuous fight back from the Españ-based squad thanks to a Bienne Bansil block on Marga Altea, who finished with nine points, and an Irah Jaboneta kill off the block.
UST’s fire wasn’t extinguished, though and immediately buried the Katipunan-based crew to a 20-7 deficit in the final frame. Joan Monares scored back-to-back points before a 5-1 exchange capped by a Poyos cross court to end the match.
Rookie Kianne Olango led the Maroons with 18 points and Monares added 13 points. Jaboneta added eight points and 13 excellent receptions. Julia de Leon tossed 13 excellent sets.
It was the third straight loss for UP who opened their season with a 2-0 card.
